Oban is set to host one of the biggest days in the Scottish shinty calendar when the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final comes to Mossfield Park on Saturday 19 September.

And it is a final with everything: Kingussie against Newtonmore, two of the most decorated clubs in shinty, renewing one of the sport’s great rivalries on Oban soil.

A repeat of last year’s classic

Newtonmore arrive in Oban as the defending champions, having beaten Kingussie 3–2 in the 2025 final at Bught Park, Inverness, to lift the trophy for a record 35th time. Iain Robinson scored twice in that final, with 16-year-old Joe Coyle also on target.

Kingussie, meanwhile, are back in the final for the fifth consecutive year. Their route to the 2026 showpiece included a dramatic 3–2 extra-time victory over Kinlochshiel in the quarter-finals, before they defeated Skye 4–1 in their semi-final at Bught Park.

Newtonmore’s passage was rather more dramatic. After a 6–0 quarter-final demolition of Glenurquhart, they faced Oban Camanachd in the semi-final at Taynuilt. The match finished 2–2 after extra time, before Newtonmore prevailed 2–1 on penalties to book their place in the final.

Two giants, one trophy

There is no shortage of history between these clubs. Newtonmore are the record winners of the Camanachd Cup, while Kingussie are among the competition’s most successful sides. Last year’s final demonstrated just how little separates the two when the biggest prize is at stake — Newtonmore eventually edging a tense encounter 3–2.

The 2026 final therefore offers Kingussie the chance to reclaim the trophy, while Newtonmore will be determined to prove that last year’s success was the beginning of another period of dominance rather than a one-off.

For Oban, there is an added local interest. Mossfield Park is home to Oban Camanachd, who came agonisingly close to reaching their own home final after taking Newtonmore all the way to penalties in the semi-final.

A major sporting occasion for Oban

With the final being staged at Mossfield Park, visitors can expect a terrific atmosphere as supporters from Badenoch and beyond descend on Oban for a day centred on one of Scotland’s oldest and most distinctive sports.
