The Argyllshire Gathering, established in 1871, was initially created to unite the clans of Argyll, a geographically extensive county. Clan rivalries were present, but a Gathering featuring traditional sports effectively maintained a sense of unity and peace.

The Gathering today is a commemoration of Highland heritage and tradition, featuring dances, pipe tunes, and athletic events that have been practiced for centuries. It is a day characterised by intense competition and amicable rivalry, a day dedicated to reestablishing previous connections and forming new friendships.
